Our first lie in, leisurely breakfast and out at 0900 to visit the canyon. It is the world’s second largest (Grand Canyon takes first place) 167 kms long, 27 kms across at its widest and 550m deep. We viewed it at about 90kms from its start at quite a wiggly point and then had a 3km walk along the edge before driving to another viewing point. It is possible to hike the canyon which takes 5 days and has to be pre-arranged – no day walkers are allowed.
It was quite spectacular although there weren’t very many different colours (maybe more at sunrise/set).
Despite the very arid terrain, a few flowers manage to grow here and there.
We were back to the lodge for lunch and then had the afternoon at leisure. We decided to do the sundowner walk again but it wasn’t quite as good, the light was different and a cooling breeze.
